Best small air fryers for one or two people: six from 2 to 5 quarts that fit a real counter
Most air fryers are sold to families and sized for them. For one or two people the questions are different: will it fit under the cabinets, can one person lift it, and does a 2-quart basket actually feed anyone? Six compact machines, 2 to 5 quarts, compared on the makers' own capacities, wattage, dimensions and weights.

† Figure from a retailer listing or otherwise awaiting confirmation from the manufacturer; other figures come from manufacturer manuals and spec sheets.
Dimensions and weights are the makers’ own except for the Chefman, whose page carries no specifications; its size and weight come from the Amazon listing and are marked as pending. The Cosori’s width includes the basket handle, which is how it sits on a counter; without the handle it is 8 inches. The Ninja Crispi’s weight is the whole system — pod, both containers, lids and plates — not what you lift when cooking.
What quarts mean for one person
Air fryers are sold by basket volume, and the volume tells you how much you can cook at once, not how big the machine is. The makers’ own portion ratings are the useful translation: Instant says its 2-quart basket takes four cups of fries or a quarter chicken; Cosori calls its 2.1 quarts one or two people; Ninja says the 5-quart Pro holds four pounds of fries or five pounds of wings. Between 2 and 2.6 quarts you are cooking one main portion, or two people’s sides in two rounds. At 4 to 5 quarts two people eat from one round.
The second number that matters is watts, for two reasons. A bigger basket needs a bigger element — the 900 W Cosori heats 2.1 quarts, the 1,750 W Ninja heats 5 — so wattage does not make a small machine faster, it just scales with the basket. And a US kitchen circuit is usually 15 amps, roughly 1,800 W; the 1,750 W Ninja wants that circuit to itself, while the 900–1,300 W machines leave room for a coffee maker on the same breaker.

The Crispi is not a drawer at all. It is a 1,500 W heating pod that locks onto the top of a glass container — a 6-cup one for a single portion, a 4-quart one for a family tray — and air-fries whatever is inside at up to 450°F, by Ninja’s page. When it is done you take the pod off, put a lid on the glass and put the glass in the fridge. The containers, lids, crisper plates and adapter are all dishwasher safe, Ninja says, and the glass is borosilicate with no non-stick coating to scratch.
For one person this changes the routine: a chicken thigh and vegetables in the 6-cup container, eat half, lid the rest. Ninja’s dimensions for the system are 11.5 by 9.76 by 11.81 inches and 14.55 lb, which is the whole kit in a box; in use you handle a pod that sits on a container about the size of a casserole dish. That is the trade: the pod needs a cabinet when it is not cooking, and there are two containers to wash instead of one basket.
Buy it if you cook for yourself and live out of the fridge; skip it if you want a machine that sits in one spot and does one thing with one button.
Strengths
- Glass containers double as storage — cook, lid, refrigerate
- All accessories dishwasher safe, by Ninja's own page
- 450°F ceiling, higher than most compact drawers
Limitations
- 14.55 lb for the full system — the heaviest here
- The PowerPod needs its own cabinet space when not in use
- Two containers to wash instead of one basket
Good for
- one person who wants leftovers stored in the same dish
- a kitchen with no room for a permanent drawer-style fryer
- anyone avoiding non-stick coatings
Look elsewhere if
- a family cooking two things at once
- a cook who wants a set-and-forget basket machine

Nine inches wide is the headline. Instant’s dimensions for the Vortex Mini are 11.26 by 9.02 by 11.73 inches, which is the smallest footprint in this group by width, and it takes a 10-inch strip of counter between a toaster and the wall. Inside is a 2-quart basket Instant rates at four cups of fries or a quarter chicken, heated by 1,300 W across a 120 to 400°F range — the low end useful for reheating — with four one-touch programs on a touch panel.
The weight is the surprise: 7.28 lb in Instant’s manual, heavier than the Cosori and the Dash despite the smaller basket. And the dishwasher claim for the basket and tray is on the Amazon listing, not on Instant’s product page, so we mark it pending. Instant’s page does not state the warranty.
For a studio kitchen, a dorm or a second home it is the right size. For two people it is a two-round machine.
Strengths
- 9 in wide — fits a 10-inch gap of counter
- 1300 W heats the small basket quickly
- Four one-touch programs, no dials to learn
Limitations
- 2 qt is one portion; two people cook twice
- 7.3 lb, heavier than its size suggests
- Dishwasher claim comes from the listing, not Instant's page
Good for
- a studio apartment or dorm
- one person cooking sides and snacks
- a second air fryer for a vacation home
Look elsewhere if
- two main portions in one round
- whole chickens or anything over about a pound

Cosori publishes more about the Lite than anyone else here publishes about anything: 2.1 quarts (2.0 L), 900 W, 170–400°F, a 1–60 minute timer, 10.1 by 8.3 by 10.5 inches including the handle (8.0 without), 4.87 lb, noise under 48 dB, a dishwasher-safe basket and crisper plate, and a two-year limited warranty. At under five pounds it is the one machine here you would happily lift out of a cabinet every evening.
The 900 W element is both its virtue and its limit. It is the lightest load on a shared kitchen circuit — run it with the kettle — but it preheats more slowly than the 1,300 and 1,750 W machines, and Cosori’s own temperature range starts at 170°F rather than 120. The ceramic-coated basket is marketed as PFAS-free.
If you put the air fryer away between uses, or cook late in a shared apartment, this is the one.
Strengths
- 4.9 lb — lifts out of a cabinet one-handed
- 900 W is the gentlest load on a shared kitchen circuit
- Two-year warranty, the longest in this group
Limitations
- 900 W means a slower preheat than 1300–1750 W rivals
- 2.1 qt is still a one-portion basket
- Handle adds 2 inches to the width
Good for
- a dorm, RV or small apartment kitchen
- someone who puts the fryer away after each use
- late-night cooking in a shared flat
Look elsewhere if
- cooking for two in one round
- anyone who wants the fastest possible preheat

Two dials — one for time, one for temperature — a bell when it is done, and a 2.6-quart basket that holds a little more than the 2-quart machines. Dash’s page gives 11.3 by 8.7 by 10.7 inches and 6.1 lb, and a warranty of one year that becomes two if you register. The DCAF200 manual adds 1,000 W and a 170–400°F range.
There is no display, so the temperature is where the dial says it is, give or take; and 1,000 W preheats more slowly than the Instant. What you get in return is a machine with nothing to learn and nothing to update, in colors chosen for a counter rather than a spec sheet.
For a student, a second home or anyone who distrusts touch panels, it is the honest choice.
Strengths
- Nothing to learn — a timer dial and a temperature dial
- 2.6 qt holds a little more than the 2-quart rivals
- Second year of warranty for the price of registering
Limitations
- No digital readout, so temperature is approximate
- 1000 W preheats slower than the Instant or Ninja
- Color options matter more than features — it is a basic machine
Good for
- a student or a second home
- anyone who distrusts touch panels
- one person cooking one thing at a time
Look elsewhere if
- precise, repeatable temperatures
- two main portions

The TurboFry is the narrow one: 7.87 inches wide by the listing, which Chefman’s own product page does not confirm because it lists no specifications at all. The figures we can stand behind come from the user guide: 1,000 W at 120 V, a 200 to 400°F range, a 60-minute timer with auto shut-off, and a dishwasher-safe basket. The listing’s 9.45 by 7.87 by 11 inches and 5 lb are marked pending.
The 200°F minimum rules out low-temperature dehydrating, and 2 quarts is strictly one portion. But for reheating pizza, a tray of fries or a couple of chicken thighs in a galley kitchen, it does the job for the least money of the six.
Buy it knowing the numbers are the listing’s; skip it if you want a maker’s spec sheet behind every figure.
Strengths
- Under 8 in wide — fits where nothing else will
- Dishwasher-safe basket, per the manual
- 60-minute timer with auto shut-off
Limitations
- 200°F minimum, so no low-temperature dehydrating
- Dimensions and weight come from the listing, not Chefman
- 2 qt: one portion, every time
Good for
- a galley kitchen or an RV
- someone who wants the cheapest decent single-portion fryer
- reheating pizza and fries
Look elsewhere if
- cooking for two
- anyone who wants a maker's spec sheet behind every number

This is where compact stops meaning single-portion. Ninja’s page gives a 5-quart basket that holds up to four pounds of fries, 1,750 W, a 400°F ceiling, 14.84 by 11.34 by 10.55 inches, 10.67 lb and a 31.2-inch cord. Two people eat from one round, and the body is the lowest in the group at 10.55 inches — it slides under a short cabinet where the 11.7-inch Instant will not.
Depth is the catch: at 14.84 inches it reaches further back than anything else here, and on a 24-inch counter with a backsplash it leaves 9 inches in front. The 1,750 W element wants its own 15-amp circuit, and 10.67 lb is not a lift-out-of-the-cabinet weight. Ninja’s page does not say which parts are dishwasher safe.
For a couple with a long counter and a 15-inch-tall cabinet gap, it is the only machine here that cooks dinner for two at once.
Strengths
- 5 qt cooks dinner for two in one round
- 1,750 W — the fastest preheat in the group
- Lowest body here at 10.6 in; fits under a short cabinet
Limitations
- 14.8 in deep: check the counter in front of the backsplash
- 10.7 lb — not a lift-out-of-the-cabinet machine
- 400°F ceiling, not 450°F like the Crispi
Good for
- two people who want one round of cooking
- a 15-inch cabinet gap with depth to spare
- chicken wings by the pound
Look elsewhere if
- a single person with a tiny counter
- a shelf under 11 in tall once clearance is added
How to choose
- Portions. One person: 2 to 2.6 quarts. Two people, one round: 5 quarts. Anything bigger is for families.
- Width first, then height. The Instant is 9 inches wide and 11.7 tall; the Ninja Pro is 11.3 wide and 10.6 tall. Measure the strip of counter and the gap under the cabinet, and add clearance for the hot exhaust.
- Circuit. 900–1,300 W shares a breaker; 1,750 W does not.
- Lifting. Under 5 lb (Cosori) comes out of a cabinet nightly; over 10 lb (Ninja Pro) lives on the counter.
- Cleaning. Dishwasher claims that come from the maker: Ninja Crispi (all accessories), Cosori (basket and plate), Chefman (basket, per the manual). The rest are unconfirmed.
Who should keep the oven
If you cook for four, none of these is your machine; the 6-quart and dual-drawer category is the right one. If your kitchen has no counter at all, the Ninja Crispi is the only one that goes away between meals without a dedicated shelf — but only because the glass containers double as storage. And if you own a toaster oven with a convection setting, you already own a slow air fryer.
Which one, by situation
- Alone, and you eat leftovers: Ninja Crispi.
- Alone, and counter space is the whole problem: Instant Vortex Mini.
- Alone, and it lives in a cabinet: Cosori Lite.
- A dial person: Dash Tasti-Crisp.
- The cheapest decent one: Chefman TurboFry.
- Two of you, one round of cooking: Ninja Air Fryer Pro 5 qt.

How many quarts do I need for one person?
About 2 quarts covers a single main portion: Instant rates its 2-quart Vortex Mini at four cups of fries or a quarter chicken, and Cosori pitches its 2.1-quart Lite at one or two people. For two people who want dinner cooked in one round, you need a basket in the 4 to 5 quart range — Ninja says its 5-quart Pro holds up to four pounds of fries. Anything bigger is a family machine.
Will a 1,750 W air fryer trip a breaker?
On a standard 15-amp US kitchen circuit you have about 1,800 W to play with, so a 1,750 W machine like the Ninja Pro wants that circuit to itself — run it with a 1,500 W kettle on the same circuit and the breaker trips. The 900 W Cosori Lite and 1,000 W Dash and Chefman leave room for something else. Check which outlets share a breaker before you decide where the air fryer lives.
Which parts go in the dishwasher?
Ninja says every Crispi accessory is dishwasher safe; Cosori says the Lite's basket and crisper plate are; the Chefman manual says its basket is. Instant's claim for the Vortex Mini comes from the listing rather than Instant's own page, and Ninja's AF141 page does not say either way — treat those two as hand-wash until the manual in the box tells you otherwise.
How much space do I need above it?
Air fryers blow hot, slightly greasy air out of the back and top. The common advice from makers is a few inches of clearance on every side and more above; the practical rule in our sizing guide is to add about 4 inches to the machine's height and compare that with the gap under your cabinets, or pull the machine to the front edge of the counter while it runs.
