Best airtight food storage containers: five sets for the pantry, the fridge and the lunch bag, on the makers' rules

Food containers are three products sold under one name: canisters for dry goods, boxes for leftovers, and boxes that carry lunch without leaking. Buying one set for all three gets a drawer of mismatched lids. Five sets from OXO, Rubbermaid, Snapware, Pyrex and Sistema, compared on sizes, materials, seals and the makers' own microwave, oven, freezer and dishwasher rules.

Contents are the makers’ own lists and show why piece counts mislead: the 14-piece Rubbermaid set is seven containers. Microwave and dishwasher rules are what each maker states; a blank cell means the maker’s page does not say. The Snapware lid’s gasket is a listing detail, marked pending.

Three jobs, three kinds of box

A pantry canister holds flour, rice and cereal, seals against air, and never sees the microwave; it should be square, so it stacks without gaps, and clear, so you can see when the rice is low. A leftovers box holds wet food in the fridge and goes in the microwave, and at home can be glass because it does not travel. A lunch box travels, so it must be light and must not leak, which means plastic and latches with a gasket.

Buying one set for all three is how the drawer of orphan lids happens. The shortlist below is one set per job plus two kinds of glass, and the comparison that matters is the maker’s own rules for microwave, oven, freezer and dishwasher — which are not the same for the box and the lid.

Ten square BPA-free canisters — 4.4, 2.8, 2.7 and 2.2 quarts, two of 1.1, two of 0.6, two of 0.4 — with the POP lid: push the button and it seals, push again and it releases, one-handed. OXO rates them top-rack dishwasher safe and for dry goods, by its page. Square sides mean no wasted shelf.

They are pantry containers, not leftover boxes: not for the microwave, not for wet food. The lids come apart into several pieces to dry, and the set is pricey per canister.

For a dry-goods pantry, baking supplies or an open shelf where the containers show, it is the set.

Strengths

  • Square: no wasted shelf space
  • One-handed seal
  • Sizes from spice jar to flour bin

Limitations

  • Pantry containers — not for leftovers or the microwave
  • Lids have several parts to dry
  • Pricey per container

Good for

  • a dry-goods pantry
  • baking supplies
  • a visible open shelf

  • leftovers and lunches
  • the freezer

Seven clear Tritan containers — two of 0.5 cup, two of 1.3, two of 3.2 and one of 9.6 — with latching, vented lids that Rubbermaid rates leak-proof, microwave-safe with the lid on and the vent open, freezer-safe and dishwasher-safe. Clear like glass and a fraction of the weight.

The biggest is 9.6 cups, so there is no batch box; the latches collect food; and in our experience of Tritan it still colors with tomato over years, whatever the stain-resistant claim.

For packed lunches, a fridge of leftovers and anyone who carries soup in a bag, it is the plastic set.

Strengths

  • Leak-proof latches — soup in a bag
  • Microwave with the vented lid on
  • Clear like glass, lighter than glass

Limitations

  • Largest is 9.6 cups; no big batch box
  • Lid latches collect food
  • Plastic still stains with tomato over years, despite the claim

Good for

  • packed lunches
  • a fridge of leftovers
  • anyone who carries food

Look elsewhere if

  • the oven
  • a household that wants glass only

Five Pyrex glass dishes — a 6-cup rectangle at 9 by 7 by 2.75 inches, two 4-cup squares and two 1-cup squares — with Snapware’s four-latch plastic lids, by the maker’s page; the lid gasket is a listing detail. Glass goes in the oven and the microwave and does not stain; the latches hold the lid for the fridge.

The lids are not for the oven and the gaskets need drying; glass is heavy next to the Rubbermaid; and only one dish is over 4 cups.

For batch cooking that goes from oven to fridge to microwave in the same dish, or a household that keeps plastic off food, it is the one.

Strengths

  • Glass bases — oven, microwave, no staining
  • Four-latch lids seal better than slip-on Pyrex lids
  • Square shapes stack

Limitations

  • Lids are not for the oven, and the gaskets need drying
  • Heavy compared with the Rubbermaid
  • Only one container over 4 cups

Good for

  • batch cooking that goes from oven to fridge
  • a household that avoids plastic touching food
  • leftovers reheated in the dish

Look elsewhere if

  • carrying lunch on a commute
  • a tiny fridge

Six tempered-glass dishes — two of 2 cups, a 4-cup and a 7-cup round, a 3-cup and a 6-cup rectangle — with BPA-free press-on lids, nesting into one stack. Pyrex’s page states the care rules: the glass is dishwasher, freezer, microwave and preheated-oven safe; the lids are top-rack dishwasher and microwave safe, not oven.

The press-on lids are not leak-proof — do not carry soup — and they are the first thing to crack; round dishes waste fridge space.

For leftovers at home, reheated in the same dish, as a first glass set, it is the cheap classic.

Strengths

  • Nests into a single stack
  • Glass goes into a preheated oven
  • Cheap per dish

Limitations

  • Press-on lids are not leak-proof — do not carry soup
  • Lids are the first thing to crack
  • Round dishes waste fridge space

Good for

  • leftovers at home
  • reheating in the microwave in the same dish
  • a first glass set

Three one-liter rectangles at 6.9 by 5 by 3.1 inches with a clip lid you open one-handed, rated by Sistema for the freezer, the top rack of the dishwasher and the microwave without the lid. The listing adds that they are made in New Zealand.

Microwave without the lid only, 1 liter is a lunch and not a batch, and the plastic stains with curry.

For work lunches, single frozen portions and a family that loses lids, buy three, then three more.

Strengths

  • Clip lid you can open with one hand
  • Freezer, microwave and dishwasher rules stated by Sistema
  • Light

Limitations

  • Microwave only without the lid
  • 1 L is a lunch, not a batch
  • Plastic stains with curry

Good for

  • work lunches
  • freezing single portions
  • a family that loses lids

Look elsewhere if

  • the oven
  • big batches

How to choose

  1. The job. Pantry: OXO. Lunch bag: Rubbermaid or Sistema. Oven and fridge: Snapware. Leftovers at home: Pyrex.
  2. Material. Glass at home, plastic in transit.
  3. Leak-proof. Only Rubbermaid claims it. Press-on Pyrex lids are not.
  4. Lid rules. Microwave with the lid: Rubbermaid (vented), Pyrex. Without: Sistema. Oven: no lid here, ever.
  5. Count containers, not pieces. 14 pieces is 7 boxes.

Who should buy deli containers instead

If the fridge turns over every two days and nothing goes in the oven, a stack of identical round deli containers with one lid size beats every set here for the price of the Sistema. The sets are for the pantry that stays sorted and the glass that goes in the oven.

Which one, by situation

  • Flour, rice, cereal: OXO POP.
  • Soup in a bag: Rubbermaid Brilliance.
  • Batch cooking in glass: Snapware Total Solution.
  • Leftovers, cheap glass: Pyrex Simply Store.
  • Lunch, by the handful: Sistema KLIP IT.

Glass or plastic?

Glass goes in the oven, does not stain and does not hold smells; it is heavy and it breaks. Plastic is light and travels; it stains with tomato and curry over the years, whatever the box says. The common answer is glass at home (Snapware or Pyrex) and plastic in the bag (Rubbermaid or Sistema), with a pantry set (OXO) that never sees food that is wet.

What does leak-proof actually mean?

Rubbermaid rates the Brilliance as leak-proof, with four latches and a gasket; that is the set to carry soup in. Snapware's four-latch lids seal the fridge but Snapware does not make a leak claim on its page; Pyrex's press-on lids are explicitly not for carrying; Sistema's clip lids are for lunches, not liquids.

Can the lid go in the microwave?

Rubbermaid: yes, with the vent open. Pyrex: yes, lids are microwave-safe, though not oven-safe. Sistema: no, microwave without the lid. Snapware and OXO do not say on their pages, and OXO's are pantry canisters that should not be in the microwave at all.

How many pieces is a 14-piece set?

Seven. Makers count lids. Rubbermaid's 14-piece set is seven containers; OXO's 10-piece is ten canisters, because the lids are attached; Snapware's 10-piece is five dishes; Pyrex's 12-piece is six. Read the contents line, not the number on the box.

Shortlist · Storage

Best under-bed storage: six boxes and bags from 6.1 inches tall, measured against the gap under your bed

Under-bed storage fails in one way: the box is taller than the gap. The second way is that it is longer than the bed is wide, so it sticks out. Four rigid boxes from Sterilite and IRIS and two fabric bags, compared on height, length, capacity and lid, with the makers' figures where the makers publish them and the listing's — marked — where they do not.

Guide · Storage

Measure before you buy storage: the under-bed gap, the shelf depth and the fridge, in inches

Storage products are returned for one reason: they do not fit. The box is taller than the gap under the bed, the canister is deeper than the shelf, the container does not go in the fridge door. This guide lists what to measure, where, and what to subtract, with the published dimensions of three boxes and a canister set as worked examples and the quarts-to-liters arithmetic the labels assume.
