Measure before you buy storage: the under-bed gap, the shelf depth and the fridge, in inches
Storage products are returned for one reason: they do not fit. The box is taller than the gap under the bed, the canister is deeper than the shelf, the container does not go in the fridge door. This guide lists what to measure, where, and what to subtract, with the published dimensions of three boxes and a canister set as worked examples and the quarts-to-liters arithmetic the labels assume.

Under the bed: three measurements
Height is the one that fails. Measure from the floor to the lowest part of the frame, which on most beds is the side rail, not the slats or the mattress, and subtract an inch for a full lid and carpet. That is the tallest box that will slide in and out loaded.

Sterilite’s 1960 is 6.1 inches tall, 34.9 long and 16.6 wide outside, with an interior of 30.5 by 12.75 by 5.4 inches — Sterilite publishes both sets. It wants a 7-inch gap, and a 35-inch run from the side of the bed.
Run is the second measurement: from the side of the bed to the middle, because a box goes in from the side. Under a 60-inch queen a 35-inch box fits from each side; under a 38-inch twin against a wall there is room for one, and a box under 24 inches fits with margin.
Strengths
- 6.1 in tall clears most bed frames
- Clear base — you see what is in it
- Six boxes: enough for a whole bedroom
Limitations
- No wheels: a full box drags on carpet
- Snap lid, not latching
- Six is too many for one bed
Good for
- sweaters and bedding under a bed with 7 in of clearance
- a household organizing two bedrooms at once
- stacking in a closet when not under the bed
Look elsewhere if
- a bed with 5 in of clearance
- heavy loads you pull out often

Sterilite’s 1496 is 23.8 inches long, 16 wide and 6.9 tall, with a 20 by 13.4 by 6.4 inch interior and a latching lid. It is the box for a twin, or for a box that is carried out full — and it needs an 8-inch gap, an inch more than the 1960.
Width is the third, and it rarely fails: it runs along the bed, where there is usually more room than you need. What fails instead is the nightstand, which sits in front of the gap on one side.
Strengths
- Latching lid stays on when you carry it
- Short enough to fit sideways under a narrow bed
- Stacks when latched
Limitations
- 6.9 in tall — needs more clearance than the 1960
- 32 qt is a sweater drawer, not a bedding box
- Six-pack again
Good for
- shoes, sweaters and papers
- a bed with 7.5 in of clearance
- a closet shelf as well as a bed
Look elsewhere if
- bulky bedding
- a low platform bed
Interior, not exterior, for what goes in
Exterior dimensions decide whether the box fits the bed; interior decides whether the comforter fits the box, and the difference is an inch or more each way for walls and the lid’s lip. Few makers publish interiors.

The IRIS 50-quart long box’s listing gives 32.5 by 17.8 by 6.5 inches outside and 28.5 by 15.25 by 5.75 inside — a rare interior figure, though it is the retailer’s, because IRIS’s own site could not be reached, and we mark it as pending. A queen comforter folded in quarters is about 30 by 22 inches, so it goes in folded once more.
If the maker gives only an exterior, subtract an inch from length and width and three-quarters from height for a rough interior.
Strengths
- 50 qt swallows a comforter
- Interior dimensions stated, not just exterior
- Latching lid
Limitations
- 6.5 in tall: measure the bed
- No wheels on a box this long
- Listing figures only
Good for
- winter bedding
- a queen or king bed with a long clear run underneath
- one big box instead of two small ones
Look elsewhere if
- a bed with less than 7 in of clearance
- frequent access
Quarts to liters to gallons
US storage is sold in quarts, imported bags in liters, Ziploc in gallons. A quart is 0.946 liters; a gallon is 4 quarts or 3.79 liters. A 41-quart box is 39 liters; a 95-liter bag is 100 quarts; a 17-gallon tote is 68 quarts. For a rigid box the figure is honest. For a fabric bag it is the bag stuffed to the seams, and the real capacity is whatever fits under the bed.
Shelves: depth and the gap between them
A standard upper kitchen cabinet is 12 inches deep inside and the door frame takes a little; a pantry cabinet is 24, a base cabinet about 22. Then the height between shelves, which is often adjustable and often forgotten.

OXO’s POP canisters are square, so they fill a shelf without the wasted corners of round jars; the ten-piece set runs from 0.4 to 4.4 quarts. Being square is the measurement that matters: two rows of 4.5-inch canisters go into a 12-inch cabinet with room for the door, and a tall one needs the shelf above moved up.
Measure the shelf depth with the door closed, the height from shelf to shelf, and the width if the canisters are to line up in one row.
Strengths
- Square: no wasted shelf space
- One-handed seal
- Sizes from spice jar to flour bin
Limitations
- Pantry containers — not for leftovers or the microwave
- Lids have several parts to dry
- Pricey per container
Good for
- a dry-goods pantry
- baking supplies
- a visible open shelf
Look elsewhere if
- leftovers and lunches
- the freezer
The fridge: shelf and door
Fridge shelves are 13 to 17 inches deep and the gap between them adjusts; the door bins take a container up to about 4 inches deep. Square and rectangular containers stack and fill a shelf; round ones do not. The 9.6-cup Rubbermaid Brilliance and the 6-cup Snapware rectangle on our containers shortlist are the batch sizes, and whether they fit two high on a shelf is a shelf-gap measurement, not a product one.
What to write down before ordering
- Under the bed: floor to side rail, minus one inch; side of bed to center; which sides have a nightstand.
- Closet shelf: depth with the door closed; height to the shelf above; width.
- Kitchen cabinet: 12 inches deep upper, 22 to 24 lower; shelf gap.
- Fridge: shelf depth, shelf gap, door-bin depth.
- On the product page: exterior for fit, interior for contents, and whether the figures are the maker’s or the retailer’s.

How much do I subtract from the under-bed gap?
An inch. Measure from the floor to the lowest part of the frame — usually the side rail, which sits below the slats — and subtract an inch for the lid riding up on a full box and for carpet pile. A 6.1-inch box needs a 7-inch gap; a 6.9-inch latching box needs 8.
What is the difference between exterior and interior dimensions?
Exterior is the box's footprint, which decides whether it fits the gap and the run; interior is the space inside, which decides whether the comforter fits. Walls and the lid's lip take about an inch each way: Sterilite's 1960 is 34.9 by 16.6 by 6.1 outside and 30.5 by 12.75 by 5.4 inside. Few makers publish both; Sterilite does, and the IRIS listing does.
Quarts, liters, gallons?
A US quart is 0.946 liters; a gallon is 4 quarts or 3.79 liters. So a 41-quart box is about 39 liters and a 17-gallon tote is 68 quarts. Capacity figures for rigid boxes are honest; for fabric bags they describe the bag stuffed to the seams.
How deep is a kitchen shelf?
A standard upper cabinet is 12 inches deep inside, a pantry cabinet 24, a base cabinet about 22. A square canister that is 4.5 inches on a side goes two deep in an upper cabinet with room for the door; a round one wastes the corners. Measure the height between shelves too — the tallest OXO POP canister is the 4.4-quart one.
