Best cordless stick vacuums for an apartment: six from 5.2 to 8.1 pounds, on the makers' own run times
In an apartment a cordless stick is the only vacuum: light enough for a flight of stairs, small enough for a closet, and able to do 900 square feet on one charge — while makers quote run time in the mode you will never use. Six sticks from Dyson, Shark, Samsung, Bissell and Eureka, compared on weight, run time per mode, charge, bin and warranty as the makers publish them.

Weights are the makers’ own, measured as the machine is used with the floor head; Dyson’s are for the stick without accessories. Run times are the maximum each maker publishes, which is the lowest power setting unless stated. Suction figures are left out of the table because only Samsung (280 AW) and Eureka (120 AW) publish one on their own pages; Dyson’s 115 AW for the V8 is a listing figure.
What run time means on a stick
The number that sells cordless vacuums is minutes, and every maker quotes it from the lowest setting. On high power — the setting carpet needs — a 60-minute machine runs for a quarter of that. Two makers here are straight about it: Eureka lists 15, 30 and 60 minutes by mode, and Bissell lists 40 on low and 13 on turbo. The rest publish the eco figure and leave the high-power number to the manual.
For an apartment the arithmetic is kind. A 900-square-foot one-bedroom with hard floors and a couple of rugs takes about 20 minutes on a medium setting, which every machine here manages. The questions that actually separate them are weight — 5.2 lb against 8.1 lb is the difference between a one-hand carry and a two-hand one — the bin, the charge time, and where the thing lives when it is not cleaning.

The V8 has been Dyson’s entry stick for years, and the reason to buy it over the newer machines is the lack of them: no screen, no laser, no sensor, 5.6 lb, a 0.14-gallon bin, up to 40 minutes on the lower setting and a five-hour charge, all from Dyson’s page. It converts to a handheld for the stairs and the car, and the parts are the parts Dyson has made the longest.
Forty minutes is on low, and the five-hour charge is the slowest here. With no floor sensor it runs at whatever power you set, so on carpet you choose between a short session on high and a long one that does not pull much.
For an apartment with mostly hard floors and a hall closet, it is the sensible Dyson. If your floors are carpet, look at the Shark.
Strengths
- 5.6 lb, the lightest full-size stick here
- Converts to a handheld for stairs and the car
- Dyson's own run-time figure, not a marketing maximum
Limitations
- 40 minutes is on low power; high is far shorter
- Five-hour charge, the slowest in the group
- No floor sensor or display
Good for
- an apartment with mostly hard floors
- a vacuum that lives in a hall closet
- someone who wants Dyson without the V12/V15 price
Look elsewhere if
- thick carpet throughout
- an hour of cleaning on one charge

At 5.2 lb it is lighter than the V8 and runs longer: up to 60 minutes by Dyson’s page, with a four-hour charge. The slim fluffy head carries a laser that lights up dust on a hard floor at a low angle, and a piezo sensor counts particles on a screen — both from the listing, which Dyson’s spec table does not spell out, so pending. The Origin trim here ships with fewer tools than the Absolute.
Sixty minutes is eco mode, and the slim head is a hard-floor head; on carpet the V12 is an ordinary stick with a small bin. It costs roughly twice the V8.
For a hard-floor apartment where the dust you cannot see bothers you, it is the one. For carpet throughout, it is the wrong Dyson.
Strengths
- 5.2 lb and a slim head that turns under furniture
- Up to 60 minutes, by Dyson's figure
- Laser shows dust on hard floors you would otherwise miss
Limitations
- Origin trim ships with fewer tools than Absolute
- Small bin on a slim machine
- Costs roughly twice the V8
Good for
- hard floors in an apartment
- anyone who finds dust reassuring to count
- a cleaner who wants the lightest Dyson
Look elsewhere if
- deep carpet
- a tight budget

Shark’s spec sheet gives 8.1 lb, a 0.7-quart dust cup — twice the Dyson V8’s — up to 70 minutes in eco mode at the handheld, a six-hour charge, washable pre-motor foam and felt plus a HEPA post-motor filter, 45.7 inches tall and a five-year limited warranty. The PowerDetect part is the sensors: it reads edges, floor type and whether you are pushing or pulling, and adjusts power. The IP1255 is a color variant of the IP1251.
Eight pounds is the heaviest machine here, a two-hand lift up stairs, and six hours is the longest charge. The 70-minute figure is the most optimistic one in the group.
For a carpeted apartment with a pet and a hallway closet tall enough for 46 inches, the bin and the warranty make it the one to live with.
Strengths
- 0.7 qt dust cup, the largest in the group
- Five-year warranty — Dyson gives two
- Detects edges, floor type and direction, adjusting power
Limitations
- 8.1 lb — a two-hand lift up stairs
- Six-hour charge
- 70-minute figure is eco mode at the handheld
Good for
- a carpeted apartment
- pet hair and edges
- someone who hates emptying bins
Look elsewhere if
- a small closet — it is 45.7 in tall
- anyone who wants a light handheld

Samsung’s sheet for the VS80F28DMP lists 6 lb, 280 AW — the highest suction figure any maker here publishes — up to 60 minutes, four modes, a 0.5-liter bin on the stick and a 2-liter bag in the Clean Station that empties it when you dock, washable HEPA filtration, 44.9 inches tall with a 9.8-inch brush, and a warranty of two years on the battery and ten on the motor.
The station is the point and the catch. It empties the vacuum without the dust cloud and charges it, and it needs a permanent floor spot with an outlet. The bags are a consumable, and the whole kit is priced like a Dyson V15.
For an allergy household, or anyone who has gone off vacuuming because of the emptying, it is the one. For a closet with no outlet, skip it.
Strengths
- The station empties and charges it — no dust cloud
- 280 AW is the highest suction figure in the group
- 6 lb with the brush, by Samsung's spec sheet
Limitations
- The station needs a permanent spot and an outlet
- Station bags are a consumable
- Priced like a Dyson V15
Good for
- a household that never wants to empty a bin
- allergy sufferers
- a hallway with room for a dock
Look elsewhere if
- a closet with no outlet
- a budget under the Dyson V8

Bissell publishes what others hide: 40 minutes on low and 13 on turbo, a 200 W motor, a removable battery that charges in under three hours, a 0.4-liter tank, a sealed HEPA system, a tangle-free brush, and 7.3 lb. It also stands on its own, so there is no wall dock to drill — the detail that decides it for a renter.
Thirteen minutes on turbo is one rug, and 0.4 liters fills quickly with dog hair. At 7.3 lb it is heavier than both Dysons.
For a first cordless on a budget, pet hair on mostly hard floors and a lease that forbids holes in the wall, it is the practical choice.
Strengths
- Bissell publishes both run times, low and turbo
- Removable battery, charges in under 3 h
- Stands on its own — no wall dock needed
Limitations
- 13 minutes on turbo is short
- 0.4 L tank fills fast with pet hair
- 7.3 lb, heavier than the Dysons
Good for
- a renter who cannot drill a wall dock
- pet hair on mostly hard floors
- a first cordless on a budget
Look elsewhere if
- long sessions on high power
- a house with lots of carpet

Eureka’s page gives 15, 30 and 60 minutes by mode, which is the way every maker should do it; 6.4 lb as a stick and 3.7 as a handheld; 120 AW on max; a 25.9 V battery that charges in three to five hours; a sealed HEPA system; a floor sensor that changes power for you; and a two-year warranty.
Fifteen minutes on max is the short end, the charge can take five hours, and Eureka does not publish the cup size.
For a buyer who reads spec sheets and wants auto-adjusting power without the Shark’s weight or price, it is the one.
Strengths
- Run time stated per mode, not just the maximum
- Sealed HEPA with a two-year warranty
- 3.7 lb as a handheld
Limitations
- 15 minutes on max
- Charge up to 5 h
- Eureka does not publish the cup size
Good for
- a budget buyer who reads spec sheets
- mixed floors in an apartment
- anyone who wants auto-adjusting power without the Shark's weight
Look elsewhere if
- a whole-house clean on one charge at high power
- a buyer who needs a big bin
How to choose
- Floors first. Mostly hard: Dyson V12 or V8, Eureka. Carpet: Shark, or the Samsung.
- Weight. 5.2–5.6 lb (Dysons) for one hand on the stairs; 7.3–8.1 lb (Bissell, Shark) for two.
- Run time on the mode you will use. Bissell and Eureka tell you; for the rest, assume a quarter of the headline on high.
- The bin. Shark 0.7 qt and the Samsung station for pets; Dyson V8 0.14 gal and Bissell 0.4 L fill in one session with a dog.
- Where it lives. Wall dock (Dyson, Shark), free-standing (Bissell), floor station with an outlet (Samsung).
- Warranty. Shark five years, Samsung ten on the motor, Dyson two, Eureka and Bissell two.
Who should buy something else
If the apartment is carpeted wall to wall and over 1,200 square feet, no stick here does it on one charge at high power; a corded upright is still the right tool. If the only mess is crumbs and a cat, a handheld from our other shortlist costs a quarter as much. And if there is no closet at all, the Samsung station is the one machine here that looks like it belongs in a hallway.
Which one, by situation
- Hard floors, small closet: Dyson V8.
- Hard floors, want the lightest and the laser: Dyson V12 Detect Slim.
- Carpet and a pet: Shark PowerDetect.
- Allergies, or you hate emptying bins: Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Lite.
- Rented walls: Bissell PowerClean FurFinder.
- Budget, and you want the real run times: Eureka ReactiSense 440.

Why does the box say 60 minutes when mine lasts 15?
Because the number on the box is the lowest power setting, usually with no motorized head attached. Dyson's V12 figure of up to 60 minutes and Shark's 70 minutes are eco mode; Eureka is unusual in listing 15, 30 and 60 minutes by mode, and Bissell gives 40 on low and 13 on turbo. Plan around the high-power figure if you have carpet, and around the middle one for hard floors.
How much run time does an apartment need?
A one-bedroom of 700 to 900 square feet with mostly hard floors takes 15 to 25 minutes on a medium setting. That is within every machine here on its lower modes. The problem is carpet: on max power the Eureka gives 15 minutes and the Bissell 13, which is one rug, not an apartment.
Do I need HEPA?
If anyone in the apartment has allergies, yes, and the word to look for is sealed: Bissell and Eureka both describe their systems as sealed HEPA, Shark lists HEPA post-motor filtration, Samsung a washable HEPA filter. Dyson's pages for the V8 and V12 do not use the HEPA label; the listing does, which we mark as pending.
Where does it live?
Every stick here is 44 to 46 inches tall when assembled, so a standard closet shelf at 48 inches or more is fine. Dyson and Shark ship wall docks that need two screws; Bissell's 4052 stands on its own, which matters to a renter; Samsung's station needs floor space and an outlet in the hallway.
