Best handheld vacuums: six from 1.4 to 3.5 pounds, for crumbs, the car and pet hair

A handheld vacuum does a ten-minute job: the counter after breakfast, the car seats, the stairs after the dog. The numbers that decide it are the ones makers bury — run time, bowl size, weight in the hand, charge time. Six handhelds from BLACK+DECKER, Shark and Bissell, compared on the makers' own figures.

Bowl sizes are left out of the table because the makers quote them in different units — milliliters for BLACK+DECKER, quarts for Shark, liters for Bissell — and each product section gives its own. All six figures for the Shark Cyclone PET come from the Amazon listing, because Shark’s own site no longer carries a page for it; they are marked pending. Bissell does not publish a charge time for the 2390A.

Weight, bowl, minutes

A handheld is held at arm’s length under a car seat, so the first number is weight: 1.4 lb (Shark WANDVAC) is a flashlight, 3.5 lb (BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX) is a small kettle. The second is the bowl, because a 0.1-quart cup is full after one job and a 680 ml bowl lasts a week of crumbs. The third is run time, and here the range is narrow — 10 to 17 minutes — which is fine for a counter and tight for a car.

Then the question of where it lives. Two of the six stand on a dock and are always charged; the rest charge from a cord and need a drawer. In our experience of the category a handheld in a drawer is used half as often as one on a counter, and the makers’ own accessories — docks, wall mounts — exist for that reason.

The shape everyone pictures when they say dustbuster: 2.6 lb, a 16 V battery, 11 minutes of run time, a four-hour charge, a 605 ml bowl, a rotating nozzle with a flip-up brush and an extendable crevice tool, 17.2 inches long, washable filter, two-year limited warranty — all from BLACK+DECKER’s page. The long nozzle reaches under car seats and the bowl is the second biggest here.

Eleven minutes is a counter and a car seat, not a car; the charge is four hours; and at 17.2 inches it wants a shelf or a wall mount, not a drawer.

For cereal, cat litter and dry spills, kept on charge in the kitchen, it is the default.

Strengths

  • 605 ml bowl — empties less often than the rest
  • 2.6 lb and a long nozzle for under car seats
  • Washable filter and a 2-year warranty

Limitations

  • 11 minutes is short
  • 4-hour charge
  • 17.2 in long — needs a shelf, not a drawer

Good for

  • kitchen crumbs and the car
  • a household that wants a vacuum always on charge
  • cereal, cat litter, dry spills

Look elsewhere if

  • stairs with pet hair
  • anything longer than a ten-minute job

The 20 V version: 15 minutes of run time, a 589 ml bowl, a four-hour charge, a washable VF110 filter, 14.2 inches long, 3.5 lb, and a charging base rather than a plug-in cord, by BLACK+DECKER’s page. Within the brand the 20 V battery pulls harder than the 16 V one, and the 15 minutes is the longest of the three dustbusters.

The price of that is weight: 3.5 lb is tiring held out at arm’s length under a seat, and it is the heaviest handheld here.

For a garage bench, cars and stairs, where it sits on its base between jobs, it is the stronger dustbuster.

Strengths

  • 15 minutes — the longest run time of the dustbusters
  • Charging base instead of a plug-in cord
  • Big 589 ml bowl

Limitations

  • 3.5 lb — tiring held at arm's length
  • 4-hour charge
  • Filter is a consumable, though washable

Good for

  • cars and stairs
  • a garage or workshop bench
  • someone who wants more suction than the 16 V model

Look elsewhere if

  • a one-handed quick grab from a kitchen drawer
  • light duty only

A 20 V dustbuster built around a motorized pet brush: 2.6 lb, 10 minutes, a four-hour charge, the biggest bowl here at 680 ml, an extendable crevice tool, 15.8 inches long and a two-year limited warranty. The brush is what lifts hair out of a sofa cushion or a car seat, which plain suction does not.

Ten minutes is the shortest run time in the group and the body is 8 inches wide, so it is bulky in a drawer.

For a household with a dog that sheds on the furniture, it is the one; without pets, buy the AdvancedClean instead.

Strengths

  • Motorized brush lifts hair from sofas and car seats
  • 680 ml bowl
  • 2.6 lb despite the 20 V battery

Limitations

  • 10 minutes of run time
  • 8 in wide — bulky in a drawer
  • 4-hour charge

Good for

  • pet hair on furniture and stairs
  • car interiors
  • a household with a dog that sheds

Look elsewhere if

  • long cleaning sessions
  • someone without pets who wants a slim handheld

At 1.4 lb the WANDVAC is a wand with a motor: 10.8 V, 115 W, a 0.1-quart cup, 17.9 inches long, a 2.5-hour charge — the quickest here — a dock that holds it upright and stores the duster-crevice tool and a multi-surface pet tool, one-touch emptying, and a one-year limited warranty, all from Shark’s page. Shark does not publish a run time.

The cup is the limit: 0.1 quart is a table’s worth of crumbs, and it is full after one job. The warranty is a year, half the BLACK+DECKERs’.

For a kitchen counter where it stands on show and gets used daily, the weight wins. For pet hair in bulk, no.

Strengths

  • 1.4 lb — lightest here by a wide margin
  • Dock keeps it charged and upright on a counter
  • One-touch empty into the bin

Limitations

  • 0.1 qt cup fills after one job
  • Shark does not publish a run time
  • One-year warranty, half the BLACK+DECKERs'

Good for

  • crumbs on a table or desk
  • a kitchen counter where it can live on show
  • quick car-seat passes

Look elsewhere if

  • pet hair in bulk
  • a full car clean on one charge

Bissell’s page gives 17 minutes — the longest here — a 14.4 V battery, a 0.7-liter tank that is also the largest, three-stage filtration and 3 lb. The listing adds a motorized brush, an upholstery tool and a crevice tool, which Bissell’s page does not itemize, so the tools are pending. It charges from a cord, and Bissell publishes no charge time.

Three pounds is the second heaviest here and there is no dock, so it lives in a drawer or a closet.

For stairs, sofas and a car with a dog in it — the longer handheld jobs — the run time and the tank make it the one.

Strengths

  • 17 minutes, the longest run time of the handhelds
  • 0.7 L tank — the largest
  • Motorized brush for hair on fabric

Limitations

  • 3 lb, heavy for a handheld
  • Charges from a cord, no dock
  • Tools list comes from the listing

Good for

  • pet hair on stairs and sofas
  • a car with a dog in it
  • longer handheld jobs

Look elsewhere if

  • a drawer handheld for crumbs
  • anyone who wants the lightest option

The listing describes a 1.6 lb handheld with a 0.52-quart cup — five times the WANDVAC’s — 65 W, 11 minutes of run time, a six-hour charge, a pet tool and an 8-inch crevice tool, and a two-year limited warranty. Shark’s site no longer has a spec page for it, so every figure is the listing’s and marked as pending.

Six hours is the slowest charge in the group, and we cannot stand behind the numbers the way we can for the others.

For someone who liked the WANDVAC’s weight and not its cup, it is the alternative — bought knowing the specs are the retailer’s.

Strengths

  • Big cup for the weight
  • Pet tool and 8-inch crevice tool included
  • 1.6 lb

Limitations

  • Shark's product page is gone; figures are from retailers
  • 6-hour charge
  • 11 minutes

Good for

  • a car with pets
  • a bedside drawer handheld
  • someone who found the WANDVAC's cup too small

Look elsewhere if

  • anyone who wants the maker's spec sheet behind the numbers
  • long jobs

How to choose

  1. The job. Counter crumbs: WANDVAC or the AdvancedClean. Car: AdvancedClean’s long nozzle, or the 20V MAX. Pet hair on fabric: furbuster or Bissell, both with a motorized brush.
  2. Weight in one hand. 1.4–1.6 lb (Sharks) for daily grabs; 2.6 lb (two BLACK+DECKERs) is the middle; 3–3.5 lb (Bissell, 20V MAX) for short jobs.
  3. Bowl. 0.1 qt (WANDVAC) empties every time; 589–680 ml (BLACK+DECKERs) and 0.7 L (Bissell) last.
  4. Dock or drawer. WANDVAC and 20V MAX dock; the rest need a cord and a drawer.
  5. Run time. 10–11 minutes for most; 15 (20V MAX) and 17 (Bissell) for the car.

Who should buy a stick instead

If the handheld would be your only vacuum, buy a stick that converts: every cordless stick on our apartment shortlist does, and the Eureka weighs 3.7 lb in handheld form. A handheld is the second vacuum, the one that lives where the mess happens.

Which one, by situation

  • Crumbs, kept on the counter: Shark WANDVAC.
  • Crumbs and the car, kept on charge: BLACK+DECKER AdvancedClean.
  • Garage and stairs, more pull: BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX.
  • Dog hair on the sofa: BLACK+DECKER furbuster.
  • Dog hair on the stairs and in the car: Bissell Pet Hair Eraser.
  • Light, big cup, accept listing specs: Shark Cyclone PET.

How long should a handheld run?

Ten to seventeen minutes is the range here, and ten is enough for a counter or a car seat. The jobs that need more are a full car interior or a flight of carpeted stairs with a dog, and there the Bissell's 17 minutes is the only comfortable figure. A handheld that runs 20 minutes on paper usually weighs more than you want in one hand.

Do volts mean suction?

Roughly, within a brand. BLACK+DECKER's 20 V dustbusters pull harder than the 16 V one; Shark's WANDVAC is 10.8 V and 115 W. Across brands volts tell you little, and none of these makers publishes a suction figure in air watts for a handheld. Bowl size and the tool on the nozzle matter more for the jobs a handheld does.

Dock or cord?

A dock keeps the vacuum charged and visible on a counter, which is why it gets used — the Shark WANDVAC and the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX have one. The others charge from a cord, so they need a drawer and the discipline to plug them in. If you expect to forget, buy a dock.

What about pet hair?

Hair on fabric wants a motorized brush, not suction: the BLACK+DECKER furbuster and the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser have one, and the Shark Cyclone PET ships a pet tool. A plain crevice nozzle moves hair around a sofa cushion without lifting it.

Best cordless stick vacuums for an apartment: six from 5.2 to 8.1 pounds, on the makers' own run times

In an apartment a cordless stick is the only vacuum: light enough for a flight of stairs, small enough for a closet, and able to do 900 square feet on one charge — while makers quote run time in the mode you will never use. Six sticks from Dyson, Shark, Samsung, Bissell and Eureka, compared on weight, run time per mode, charge, bin and warranty as the makers publish them.

How to choose a cordless vacuum: run time by mode, weight, bins and where it lives

Cordless vacuums are sold on a minutes figure measured in the mode you will not use, a suction figure most makers do not publish, and a weight that may or may not include the head. This guide explains which numbers to read, what they mean for an apartment or a house, and what the makers who publish honest figures say — with four machines as worked examples.
