Daypack or laptop backpack as a personal item? Osprey Daylite Plus vs Matein Mlassic, against the 18 x 14 x 8 rule

A 20-liter hiking daypack at 1.3 lb that carries beautifully and is an inch over the personal-item line on paper, or a 28-liter laptop backpack at 1.7 lb cut to the 18 x 14 x 8 box that fits the rule and looks like every bag at the gate. On Delta or Southwest the Osprey is the nicer bag. On Frontier, at a sizer, the Matein is the one that flies free.

Both makers publish their dimensions and weights. The airline figures are from the airlines’ own pages, read on 2026-10-10: American 18 by 14 by 8; Frontier 18 by 14 by 8 including straps, up to 35 lb; JetBlue 17 by 13 by 8; Delta and Southwest unpublished.

A 20-liter panel-loading daypack, 19 by 11 by 9 inches and 1.3 lb, with a sleeve for a laptop up to 14 inches and the hip-belt loops of a hiking pack. It is made to be worn all day.

Strengths

  • 1.3 lb for 20 L
  • Osprey's warranty and build
  • Sits well on the back — it is a hiking brand's daypack

Limitations

  • 19 in tall: over the 18 in personal-item line on paper
  • 20 L is a day, not a weekend
  • 14 in laptop limit

Good for

  • a day bag that doubles as a personal item on airlines that measure loosely
  • hiking and city walking on the same trip
  • a 13–14 in laptop

Look elsewhere if

  • a strict sizer at a Spirit gate
  • a 16 in laptop

A 28-liter laptop backpack, 18 by 12 by 7.8 inches and 1.7 lb, water-resistant polyester, a padded sleeve for a 15.6-inch laptop, a USB pass-through and a lifetime warranty on defects. It is made to be the free bag.

Strengths

  • 18 x 12 x 7.8 in — under the 18 x 14 x 8 limit on paper
  • 1.7 lb
  • Lifetime warranty on defects

Limitations

  • Soft sides bulge past 7.8 in when stuffed
  • Polyester, not nylon
  • Looks like every other backpack at the gate

Good for

  • a budget-airline personal item
  • a laptop commuter
  • one-night trips

Look elsewhere if

  • United's 17 x 10 x 9 personal item (it is 18 in tall)
  • a week of clothes

The sizer

The Matein is inside American’s and Frontier’s box with two inches to spare in width. The Osprey is an inch over in height and an inch over in depth. A soft daypack that is not stuffed squashes into an 18-inch sizer more often than not, and Delta and Southwest do not publish a size at all; Frontier measures at the gate, with the straps counted, and charges for the difference. The fare and the airline decide which bag is the gamble.

Carrying

The Osprey carries like the hiking pack it is descended from: a shaped back panel, straps that sit on the shoulders, a liter of weight saved. The Matein carries like a commuter bag, which for an airport and a hotel corridor is enough and for a day of walking is not.

The laptop

Fifteen point six inches against fourteen. A 13-inch laptop fits both. A 15 or 16 inch laptop fits only the Matein, and that alone decides it for many people.

Capacity

Twenty liters against twenty-eight. The Matein holds two nights of clothes with the laptop; the Osprey holds one, or a day’s kit. Neither holds a week.

Which one, by trip

  • Frontier, personal-item fare, laptop: Matein.
  • Delta or Southwest, hiking on the trip: Osprey.
  • A 15-inch laptop: Matein.
  • A 13-inch laptop and a day of walking: Osprey.
  • Two nights in the bag: Matein.

Is the Osprey Daylite Plus a personal item?

By Osprey's dimensions it is 19 by 11 by 9 inches — an inch taller and an inch deeper than American's and Frontier's 18 by 14 by 8. Delta and Southwest publish no personal-item dimensions and say it must fit under the seat, which it does. On a strict sizer it is a bet; on a legacy carrier it passes.

Does the Matein fit every airline?

At 18 by 12 by 7.8 by Matein's page it is inside American's and Frontier's 18 by 14 by 8 box. JetBlue publishes 17 by 13 by 8, so it is an inch over there. We have not read Spirit's or United's pages and do not quote them.

Which carries better?

The Osprey, by design: it is a hiking brand's daypack with the back panel and strap shape of one, 1.3 lb for 20 liters. The Matein is a commuter bag with flat straps and 28 liters at 1.7 lb; fine for an airport, less so for a day on your feet.

Which takes the bigger laptop?

The Matein: a 15.6-inch sleeve against the Osprey's 14. A 13-inch MacBook Air fits both; a 15 or 16 inch laptop fits only the Matein.

Best personal-item backpacks for US airlines: five bags measured against the 18 x 14 x 8 inch rule

On American and Frontier the personal item is 18 by 14 by 8 inches; JetBlue says 17 by 13 by 8; Delta and Southwest say only that it must fit under the seat. A 19-inch backpack is over the line on paper and usually fine in practice, until it is not. Five backpacks from 16 to 40 liters, compared on the makers' dimensions, weight and laptop fit against the airlines' published limits.

Personal item vs carry-on: what US airlines allow, in inches, and how to pack for the fare you bought

A basic-economy or budget fare includes a personal item and charges for a carry-on; the difference is measured in inches at the gate. This guide lists what American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and Frontier publish for each, read from their own pages on one day, explains what is missing and why, and shows how to pack a weekend into the smaller bag — with four bags as worked examples.

Best packing cubes for a carry-on: five sets from a three-cube kit to a six-piece compression set, by the makers' sizes

Packing cubes only work if they fit the bag: a 14 by 10 inch cube lies flat in a personal-item backpack, an 18 by 13.75 inch one fills a carry-on and nothing smaller. Five sets from Eagle Creek, Bagail, Gonex, BAGSMART and Shacke, compared on cube dimensions, piece count, material and compression, from the makers' pages where they publish them and the listing, marked, where they do not.
