Ninja Air Fryer Pro XL 6.5 qt (AF181) review: the family-size basket, on Ninja's own figures

A 6.5-quart basket Ninja rates at 5 pounds of fries or 9 pounds of wings, 1,750 W, a 450°F ceiling, six functions including dehydrate, and a nonstick basket and plate Ninja says go in the dishwasher. It is the step up from the 5-quart Pro on our compact shortlist, for a household that air-fries a main course — and it is the machine whose size Ninja's page and the listing cannot agree on.

The box holds the basket, the plate and a 20-recipe booklet. Strengths

  • 6.5 qt rated at 5 lb of fries or 9 lb of wings — dinner for four in one round
  • 450°F ceiling and a Max Crisp mode, by Ninja
  • Basket and crisper plate dishwasher safe, stated by Ninja

Limitations

  • 1,750 W and 14.6 A wants a kitchen circuit to itself
  • Ninja's dimensions (16.3 x 12.6 x 14.2 in) and the listing's (14.9 x 11.3 x 12.0) disagree — measure for the larger
  • One-year warranty; Cosori gives two on its compact machine

Good for

  • a family of three or four that air-fries a main course
  • wings, a whole tray of fries, a 4 lb chicken
  • a counter with room for a 15-inch-deep machine

Look elsewhere if

  • one or two people — the 2 to 5 qt compact machines
  • a shared 15-amp circuit with a kettle or coffee maker
  • a cabinet it has to come out of nightly

Capacity

Six and a half quarts is the number, and Ninja’s translation is the useful one: 5 pounds of fries or 9 pounds of wings in one round. Our sizing guide puts a main-course serving at 2 to 2.5 quarts, which makes this a three-to-four-person machine, or a one-chicken machine. It is the next step up from the 5-quart AF141 on our compact shortlist, which Ninja rates at 4 pounds of fries, and the last step before a dual-drawer design.

Heat and power

Seventeen hundred and fifty watts and a 450°F ceiling, with a Max Crisp mode that uses the top of that range. The wattage is the same as the 5-quart Pro and the top temperature is higher than the 400°F most compact machines stop at. The cost is the circuit: 14.6 A on a 15 A kitchen circuit leaves nothing for a kettle, a coffee maker or a toaster on the same breaker.

Size, and the figures that disagree

Ninja’s page gives 16.3 by 12.6 by 14.17 inches and 12.57 lb. The Amazon listing gives 14.9 by 11.3 by 12.0 inches and 11.4 lb. The gap is an inch and a half in every direction and over a pound, which looks like the difference between a boxed and an unboxed product, but neither source says so. We publish Ninja’s figures and mark them as a conflict; plan the counter for the larger set. Either way it is a 15-inch-deep machine that lives on the counter, not in a cabinet.

Cleaning

The basket and crisper plate are nonstick and dishwasher safe, by Ninja’s page. Nonstick coatings are the reason the Crispi exists with its glass containers; here the trade is the usual one — easy cleaning now, a coating that wears over years.

The warranty

One year, limited. Cosori gives two on its compact Lite; Dash one or two with registration. It is the standard Ninja term and the shortest among the machines we have on file.

Who should buy it

Three or four people eating from one round; wings, a whole tray of fries, a chicken; a kitchen with a free circuit and 16 inches of counter depth.

Who should not

One or two people, who should read the compact shortlist; a kitchen that shares a breaker between outlets; anyone who needs the machine to go away between meals.

How much does 6.5 quarts actually hold?

Ninja's own rating: up to 5 pounds of French fries or 9 pounds of chicken wings. By the sizing rule in our guide — about 2 to 2.5 quarts per adult serving of a main — that is three or four people in one round, or a 4 pound chicken.

Will it trip a breaker?

Ninja states 1,750 W and 14.6 A at 120 V. A standard US kitchen circuit is 15 A, so the air fryer wants that circuit to itself; a kettle or a coffee maker on the same breaker trips it. Find out which outlets share a breaker before choosing where it lives.

How big is it?

Ninja's page says 16.3 inches long, 12.6 wide and 14.17 tall, and 12.57 lb. The Amazon listing says 14.9 deep, 11.3 wide, 12.0 tall and 11.4 lb. We publish Ninja's figures marked as a conflict; the larger set may be the boxed product. Plan for the larger until a tape measure says otherwise.

What goes in the dishwasher?

The nonstick basket and the crisper plate, by Ninja's page. The main unit does not.

Best small air fryers for one or two people: six from 2 to 5 quarts that fit a real counter

Most air fryers are sold to families and sized for them. For one or two people the questions are different: will it fit under the cabinets, can one person lift it, and does a 2-quart basket actually feed anyone? Six compact machines, 2 to 5 quarts, compared on the makers' own capacities, wattage, dimensions and weights.

What size air fryer do I need? Quarts, servings and the counter, with real dimensions

Air fryers are sold by quarts, and quarts answer neither question a buyer has: how many people does it feed, and will it fit under the cabinets. This guide maps basket volume to servings using the makers' own ratings, then shows why a 5-quart machine can be lower than a 2-quart one — with the measurements of four compact models to prove it.

Ninja Crispi (FN101) review: an air fryer that is a lid, on Ninja's own figures

The Crispi is a 1,500 W heating pod that locks onto a glass container — a 6-cup one for a single serving, a 4-quart one for a tray — air-fries at up to 450°F, and then comes off so the glass goes in the fridge. It is the only air fryer we know of that doubles as food storage. This review is about what that trade costs: a pod to store, two dishes to wash, and 14.6 lb of kit in the box.
